Accessory Structures
Custom design does not always have to be saved for the main residence. Accessory structures from horse stables to patios can be opportunities to add unique design features to a site. Seen as an integral element to the site they can compliment the main home or while still being individual works of art in themselves.
A design charette exploring stables from classical forms to modern potential, this client wanted to provide a unique home for their horses. Using traditional post and beam construction, we studied historic forms as well as contemporary expressions of historic building methods. Similar to Tudor construction the final direction shown in the model was contemporary in execution while paying homage to its equestrian tradition.
From entertaining around a fire pit on cool fall evenings to maximizing the potential of the new carriage house, this project was far more than a simple garage. Redevelopment of the rear yard allowed for the addition of features such as a fire pit, hot tub, and detached pergola.Elements such as the pergola helped to visually integrate the existing historic character of the home with the new construction creating the feeling of it having been there for the last 100 years.
Looking to simply reduce heat gain from the hot afternoon sun, this loggia provided substantially more. In addition to providing shade by angling the loggia to the specific sun angle for this site, this structure created an outdoor living space setting this condo apart from all its neighbors. Taking full advantage of the client's wonderful landscaping, J K Janiga Architects created an outdoor space to enjoy the day while creating the needed shade for the primary living spaces. As with all our projects, the goal was to exceed the client's expectations, and this was certainly no exception.
