Historic Preservation Historic Preservation

From family farms to grand renovations, historic preservation is an integral part of J K Janiga Architects. Working with unique structures from the past and finding ways to incorporate them into the modern day world, J K Janiga Architects have both the experience and education to transform your historic structure not only into a building of today's world but also one that retains its memories of the past.

  • J K Janiga Architects gave new life to this historic church with the renovation and conversion to high-end residential apartments. The unique elements of this building such as large stained glass windows and high ceilings were saved and restored to create one of a kind living spaces, ones that could never be obtained in a new building. By keeping an open mind and creatively using the existing spaces, this historic Baptist church in downtown Ann Arbor was able to be preserved, thus saving a piece of history.

  • Adding to a small local farmhouse, this project was developed into a modern residence without sacrificing the characteristics of the original home. A large two story bedroom addition and revised entry structure were added to this home. The primary requirement was to blend new with old thereby maintaining the country charm while providing the living space needed for the modern family.

  • Inspired by the historic forms and details of this 1870's farmhouse, the addition to this home is both contextual and respectful to its older counterpart. These empty nesters were looking to design a comfortable home for their daily lives while providing more space for family gatherings. Using elements such as unique nooks and reading bays J K Janiga Architects was able to create a comfortable home for the empty nesters while still providing the open spaces needed for entertaining.

  • As a member of the family for over 100 years, this historic structure was in need of both functional updates and structural repairs. As the next generation to enjoy the home, the client desired a more modern living space while retaining historic charm of this family farm. Using this as an opportunity to renovate the entire house, correcting mistakes of the past and returning the glory of the original design, a comprehensive overhaul of this classic farm recreated the glory of a past era.
